FOR PATIENTS

Hours

Our office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each physician has a different schedule for treating patients in the office and the operating room. Our receptionists can provide information about your doctor's available hours.

When our office is closed, our answering service will assist you in arranging for emergency care.

Scheduling appointments

Contact our receptionists during office hours at 312-337-6960, or schedule a follow-up appointment as you leave our office. If you must cancel an office appointment, please call at least 24 hours in advance, so that we may accommodate another patient.

We know that your time is important, and will strive to see you at the time your appointment is scheduled, but due to the complexity and unpredictability of our patient's problems, unavoidable delays may occur. We appreciate your patience and understanding at these times.

Emergencies

You may reach our office 24 hours a day. When the office is closed, our answering service will take a message. If you have a medical emergency, we recommend that you go to the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and tell them that you wish to receive treatment from one of our physicians.

Hospital affiliations

Our doctors all treat patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Some of our physicians also treat patients at Children's Memorial Hospital, Highland Park Hospital/Evanston Northwestern Health Care, Lutheran General Hospital, and the Same-Day Surgery Center of Chicago. If you need to have treatment at a hospital other than Northwestern Memorial Hospital, our receptionists will try to accommodate your request.

Resident physicians

In keeping with our goal of establishing high-quality hand surgical care in North America, our physicians are dedicated to medical education. Prior to seeing one of our attending physicians, you may be examined by a resident physician. If you require surgical treatment, a resident physician may assist with your operation. We believe this interaction is valuable not only for the resident physicians, but also for our patients. If you have concerns about the educational process and how it works, please discuss this with your attending physician. We want you to be comfortable with your care.

Medical records

Please bring any medical records or x-rays which relate to the condition for which you are seeking treatment. Copies of the reports we prepare and x-rays we take in our office are available to you. There is a service fee for these copies.

Prescriptions and medication renewals

We ask that you call our office for prescriptions and authorization of renewals before noon on weekdays. Narcotic medication cannot usually be renewed after hours without a visit to the emergency room.

Rehabilitation and therapy

Our certified occupational therapists may help you to achieve your maximum recovery. Approximately 90% of our patients who require therapy are able to receive all of their necessary treatment within our office. When appropriate, our staff will assist you to make arrangements for therapy closer to your home.

Your therapist, working with your physician, will outline a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Your therapist will explain what you must do to aid your recovery and why it is necessary. This may include supervised exercises and manipulation as well as a home exercise program. Our therapists are skilled at creating custom splints to facilitate healing and rehabilitation of your hand.

Fees and payments

Our fees vary, depending upon the service provided. A list of physician fees for initial office visits is available from our business office. Charges for x-rays and other services are in addition to the physician fees. A list of these fees is also available.

We ask that you pay for your visit and treatment at the time of service. Our business office accepts cash, check, Visa and MasterCard. If you anticipate difficulty making your payments, please contact our billing department to discuss a payment plan.

Insurance

When you come for your first visit, please have your insurance information available. If your insurance requires that you have a referral form from your primary care physician, you must present it at your appointment. If you do not have this form, your evaluation may be delayed, and you may be asked to reschedule your appointment.

We participate in numerous HMOs and PPOs, and we can process your claim, if you provide your insurance form. We will also provide you with a detailed receipt that contains all the information your insurance carrier will require.

Your insurance may cover only a portion of the physician's fee. You are responsible for the balance not paid by your insurance company. The amount of your responsibility is determined by your insurance company, although our cashier may be able to give you some information about this amount.

Workers' compensation

If you have workers' compensation coverage, you should bring a confirmation letter or authorization form from your insurance carrier. This authorization is not required for emergency visits. You may be required to complete an additional form when you arrive. If you would like to complete this form before you arrive, click here.

Medicare

Although we accept assignment for Medicare and submit Medicare claims, you are responsible for paying 20% of the approved charge. You will be sent a notice indicating the amount not covered. Payment of your deductible and the cost of some supplies is also your responsibility, and should be made at the time of service.
